Mineral Land Rights - What you need to know

Speaker: Levonne Louie

Synopsis:

Mineral land is one of the most basic components of the oil and gas industry, but it’s often misunderstood. In this presentation you will learn about the two basic types of land, the two main categories of landowners as well as what land is acquired for oil and gas activities.  In addition, you’ll learn about the main types of agreements that companies enter into amongst themselves and how these create the various interests that accountants work with.  Do you know what is involved in assembling the land a company is drilling on? Do you know the key elements of the basic land agreements companies enter into? Are you lacking critical knowledge about mineral land and its ownership that could enhance the work you do every day? Bring your questions and I’ll attempt to demystify this complex subject.

Biography:

Levonne Louie has been an oil and gas industry professional for over thirty-five years.  She has an M.B.A., B.Comm. and B.Sc., all from the University of Calgary.  Ms. Louie has been a member of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen since 1980, served three terms on its Board and was granted the P.Land designation in 1990.  A graduate of the Directors Education Program of the Institute of Corporate Directors, Ms. Louie was granted the ICD.D designation in April, 2011.  She has experience in negotiation, government relations, business development, strategy development and coaching.  She aims to demystify the oil and gas industry so that there is better understanding between all parties. She recently published her book on mineral land rights that provides valuable information in layman’s terms.  She lives in Calgary, Alberta, where she works, teaches, consults and serves on several boards.

Location: The Atrium, Stan Grad Centre, SAIT Polytechnic
Time: 5:00pm – 7:00pm

SAIT’s MacPhail School of Energy and the Centre for Energy Asset Management Studies would like to invite you and your company, to the 4th Annual Energy Asset Management Capstone Project Showcase at SAIT Polytechnic.

Light refreshments will be served.

The Energy Asset Management (EAM) students learnall the business functions within the industry including mineral and surface land, joint ventures, operations and production accounting and well and facility asset management. They also gain an appreciation for the technical side of the business, and will graduate with relevant skills in the administration of the regulatory, financial, and contractual compliance workflow pertaining to energy industry assets.

The Capstone Project provides students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of EAM by building a presentation that clearly demonstrates this integrated interdisciplinary approach to tackling a current industry challenge. Students accomplish this by working in groups and with a mentor, to complete a realistic EAM based project.

This evening is designed specifically to highlight program competencies mastered by students, showcase the finished products of the capstone project and provide an opportunity for all industry stakeholders to interact with EAM graduating students and discuss their projects.

The Capstone Project serves as a platform linking academic studies with industrial applications and is the culmination of a two-semester process in which students are required to:

• Research, analyze, prepare, document, submit, and defend a Capstone Project Report relating to a significant program-related issue/topic.

• Apply current industry practices of project management and business principles.
